Meet RHYME, an Australian producer and singer/songwriter based in Tokyo.
Her creativity extends over a variety of fields, but she is known as a figure ice-skater, a music
selector, visual muse and poetry writer.
RHYME is active both as a solo artist and with her partner, Shinichi Osawa, whom with she has a unit
called RHYME SO.
RHYME SO was formed in Japan in 2017 and since then they have been actively releasing singles which has
made her fast discovered
emerging from 88Rising HITCII album for ‘Just Used Music Again’ and 2020 hit song “Fashion Blogger” that
was awarded “Best Music & Actress/Model” by the London fashion film festival 2020
and has made record of viewing over 2.8million times on YouTube.
In between the RHYME SO project you can experience her solo work and community she bridges within each
story.
Lately her music has been focused on environmental (such as plastic) and social impacts with her song ‘
#meburn ‘ being the highlight of this article.

また、RHYME SOプロジェクトの合間に作られた彼女のソロ作品では、それぞれのストーリーの中で彼女が橋渡しするコミュニティを体験することができます。
最近の彼女の音楽は、環境（プラスチックなど）や社会への影響に焦点を当てており、今回の記事のハイライトである曲、「#meburn」はその一例です。

Why and when did you get into music?
音楽を作り始めたきっかけはなんですか？それはまた、いつですか？
RHYME:
“My dad had a studio downstairs when I was really young, there was a program on his computer called
Sony Acid,
I had so much fun with it as a kid. So I started making all these songs, and I made an album called
“Spooky House” when I was 8
and that was really where it all began. With “Spooky House.”
I then picked up saxophone when I was 10 years old, because of Lisa Simpson from ‘The Simpsons’.
Then I started skating, so it wasn’t really until I was 18 years old when started DJing, that gave me
the confidence to slowly get back into producing music.
And since then it has never really stopped. It has been very strong, and overwhelming.
The music is in me and needs to get out. I never really wanted to start, it was just something I felt
like I needed to do.”
RHYME：
「私が幼い頃、父が地下にスタジオを持っていました。父のコンピュータにはSony Acidというプログラムが入っていて、私もそれをとても楽しんでいました。
それがきっかけで曲を作り始めるようになり、8歳のときに『Spooky House』というアルバムを作りました。
それがすべての始まりです。
それから、私は10歳のときにリサ・シンプソンズの影響で、サックスを始めました。
その後長くスケートをしていましたが、18歳のときにDJを始めてからは、少しずつ音楽制作に再び興味を持つようになりました。
その関心はとても強く、圧倒的で、そこから音楽制作が止まることはありませんでした。
音楽が私の中にあり、それを表現する必要があると感じたんです。
始めようと思ったことは一度もありませんでしたが、何かしなければならないと感じたのです。」
Why are you in Japan?
日本に住むようになったきっかけはなんですか？
RHYME:
“Good question”
「いい質問ですね」
“I was meant to go somewhere else… but so many things happened that kind of kept me here.
At the same time it was on my goals list to live here (Japan), especially in my 20s.
I didn’t ever travel as a kid, because my family didn’t have that kind of money and because of that
there wasn’t that urge to seek and explore, but that feeling came later in my life after I finished
school.
I also met a lot of good people and have since then stayed in Japan. Actually I really don’t want to
leave.”
「本来は私は日本ではないどこか別の場所に行くつもりでした。
けれど、様々なことが重なって日本に留まることになりました。
と同時に、特に20代で日本に住むことを目標にしていたということもあります。
あまりお金がなかったのでこれまで旅行をしてきませんでした。
そのため旅行がしたいという衝動はあまりなかったのですがそれが今になって来たのです。
日本に留まり、たくさんのいい人に出会い、実は今は本当に帰りたくないと思っています。」
“Life in Tokyo is super interesting.
I get to work at Shinichi Osawa’s studio every day which is a dream come true.
Everyone around me is what makes my life here. Of course there is the form of the city, but more
importantly it is the energies of the people that I never thought I would come across,
and I think that’s really what shapes my life in Tokyo.
I get to do a lot of great music shows as
well, they are of course perceived and received differently here compared to when I play overseas,
but I kind of like that. There’s this essence of the unknown.
It pushes different tempos and loudness cue’s when you’re in the state of sharing your work.
Anyways, the point is that Tokyo is really cool.”

毎日、大沢伸一さんのスタジオで仕事ができるのは夢のようです。
私の周りの人たちのおかげで、ここでの生活が成り立っています。
もちろん街の形もそうですが、それ以上に、思いもよらなかった人々との出会いによって生まれたエネルギーが、私の東京での生活を形作っているのだと感じています。
もちろん、私は海外で演奏するときとは違った受け止め方をされるでしょう。でも、私はそれが好きなんです。

RHYME is passionate about doing the earth justice, and making
change with her music.
She just released her latest single #meburn, a powerful song about the ego and toxicity of plastic use, both to the earth and humans.
Alongside that release RHYME collaborated with brands such as LUVHAIR to raise awareness, and open the discussion of
everyday use of plasticized chemicals.
RHYMEは、地球環境を改善すること、そして自分の音楽で環境問題に変化を起こすことにとても情熱を注いでいます。

RHYME:
“All of my make-up and hair products are packaged in plastic. That’s it！
Because that’s the only option that is being given to us. So I am really happy to be collaborating
with LuvHair.
I found them (LuvHair) and they have their packaging in glass, and the product itself is beautiful.
In the way that it really refreshes every part of my head, it is definitely engaging with my crown
chakra energy.
It is the first time for me to have the option of shopping hair-products in glass,
and working with LuvHair I feel better about how I am using hair-products, the factor that I can reuse the
bottles
after using them makes me so happy.”
「今私が使っているメイクアップとヘアケアの容器はすべてプラスチックです。そればかりです！でもそれが今の私たちに与えられた唯一の選択肢です。
だから、LUVHAIRとコラボできるのは本当に嬉しい。すべての容器がガラス製で、製品自体も美しいし、髪にも優しい。
ガラス製のヘアプロダクトを使用するという選択肢は、私にとって初めてのことです。

for plastic compliance within big companies and spread more awareness
of plastic issues within business and communities.”

Tell us a little bit about
#meburn
#meburn について少し教えてください
RHYME:
“Living in Japan the only problem that I am having is the amount of plastic that is used here.
I really want to find a way to share this concern without making a very cut dry record of like
“everyone come together, and let’s change the world,” I mean I love hippy songs, but I am just not
that kind of character.
So I wanted to bring some kind of “coolness-factor” into “hey let’s talk
about this issue here”
and let’s make it cool to talk about.
Obviously the past few years have been very interesting in the sense of a lot of change,
and a lot of upgrading,
but also a lot of downgrading, a lot more awareness.”
「日本に住んでいて唯一困っていることは、プラスチックの使用量が多いことです。
私はこの問題を、”みんなで協力して世界を変えよう “というような、大きすぎる問題定義をするのではなく共有する方法を見つけたいと思っています。
つまり、私はヒッピーソングが大好きですが、私はそのような性格でもそのようなキャラクターでもありません。
だから、「この問題について話し合おう」という、ある種の「クールさ」をライトに出したかったのです。
ここ数年は、大きな変化があったという意味で、非常に興味深い年でした。
多くの変化があり、多くのアップグレードがされただけでなく、多くのダウングレードもされ、多くの環境に優しい配慮が得られました。」
RHYME:
“Really only 9% of plastic is getting recycled. Recycling is such a big thing now, but nothing is really
getting done. Plastic doesn’t break down and that’s the fact that really got me.
It means that if plastic doesn’t break down it’s sitting in the oceans, or sitting on land, or sitting
around our house, it’s not ever degrading, our bodies degrade but plastic doesn’t.”
「現在世界で実際にリサイクルされているのは、プラスチックの9％だけです。
今、リサイクルは大々的に行われていますが、実際には何も行われていません。
プラスチックは分解されないという事実は、私にとって大きな驚異です。
プラスチックは海に沈んでいても、陸にあっても、私たちの家の周りに漂っていても、分解されないということです。

What is your creative process like?
創作過程はどのような感じですか？
RHYME:
”Recently I have this character I play with that is called the Internet Girl.
This Internet Girl is kind of like the dark side of the internet, the dark web, that has influencing a
lot of my creative processes. Then the character on the other side, is more pure, dressed in a white dress, representing the innocent side of RHYME.
And these two characters are always fighting a lot, I am usually in the middle narrating between both of
them. So a little bit like “good-angel” vs. “bad-angel” on the shoulders. That started in 2018, when I really felt like that character, The Internet Girl, just walked in the door
and asked for my soul.”
「最近では、「インターネット・ガール」というキャラクターで遊んでいます。
このインターネット・ガールは、インターネットの暗い側面、ダーク・ウェブのようなもので、私の創作活動の多くに影響を与えています。
もう一方のキャラクターは白いドレスを着ていて、私の純粋な面を表しています。
そして、この2つのキャラクターはいつも喧嘩ばかりしていて、私はいつも真ん中で2人の間に立ってナレーションをしています。
だからちょっと肩の力が抜けた 「良い天使」対「悪い天使」みたいな感じ。
こんな風に作り始めたのは2018年。このキャラクター、 “The Internet Girl“が突然ドアから入ってきて、私の魂を求めてきたように感じました。」
